Don’t Kiss Girls and Other Silly Stories
I love the smell of a new book.
Don’t Kiss Girls and Other Silly Stories is my 19th book, but the first time I’ve tried to improve and add to previously published stories. It’s the ‘best of’ collection from three books – Don’t Kiss Girls, Get Rich Quick and How to Get Dumped – plus 10,000 words of new material and new drawings by the multi-talented Peter Carnavas.
To celebrate, UQP are giving away 3 copies on Goodreads. Got to be in it to win it!

The Tuckshop Kid Play
The Tuckshop Kid is being performed at Studio 188 at Ipswich on September 13 and 14. Click the link for details.
The cast and director are very talented so it’s going to be a lot of fun.
Whitsunday Voices Festival
The WV crew (minus 5000 students and 100 volunteers.) Can anyone (who wasn’t there) name everyone in the photo?
It was a pleasure to be a part of the 10th anniversary of this festival. Lovely organisers, big crowds, super keen kids – what’s not to like? Five hundred locals (and a dozen thirsty authors) showed up to the literary dinner on Friday night to laugh and cry during William McInnes’ memorable speech on the power of writing and stories. Marco Gliori did an admirable job warming up the crowd with his bush poetry.
Speaking of stories, My Totally Awesome Story sold out on day one. More were ordered overnight but Australia Post (allegedly) lost half of them. The ones that did arrive were gone by 9.30 which proves they love their books in Mackay. I optimistically brought 50 copies of my recently reprinted Don’t Kiss Girls with me and they sold out too, which means I’ve gotten rid of one whole box. Only 12 boxes (clogging up my study) to go.
My Totally Awesome View
Last week Pete Carnavas and I were given a secret password and a dangerous carpark (a boom gate crashed on my boot) so we could catch an elevator to the 29th floor of the Riparian Plaza. Why? So we could speak to a cool group of Murarrie students who are sponsored by Clayton Utz lawyers. Students are buddied up with a lawyer and they write letters to each other about homework, sports day, and making money. In a kind gesture, Clayton Utz invited the 30 students to their plush office for lunch and to meet Pete and me. They also bought each student a copy of My Totally Awesome Story. (And you thought all big law firms are heartless. Shame on you!)
Despite the awesome view of the Storey Bridge. students listened to our stories for long enough to let me know that illustrators are much more talented than writers.
Those letters have obviously messed up their logic.
Spot the Teacher
The good thing about being a teacher is that you can ‘willingly persuade’ students to read your book … as long as a photo shoot is involved!
Thanks to Johnny, Sam, Sally, Mia and Jayden for being such good models. Check out the article here
